Art Attack - Art on Layaway
Kristopher Monroe
Bluebottle has the large canvas paintings you see in fancy galleries, but they also have buttons, key chains, shirts, tables, candles, jewel boxes, jewelry, knit hats, magnets, postcards and much more, all created by local area artists. Some of the artists have been featured at Rummage and all of the goods are very good and are quite reasonably priced. Even the bigger pieces are attainable for bottom-feeders and starving artists like myself who never thought they could own a piece of good art outside a reproduction. Bluebottle’s revolutionary payment plan allows wage slaves/ or cheap bastards to simply make weekly, bi-weekly or monthly payments until the piece is paid off, making art actually affordable.
Upstairs is a formal gallery which is currently exhibiting the artist Y Square’s Japanese American “lolly - pop” paintings, an interesting mix of cats in Zen gardens and UFO’s overhead, rendered in day glow pastels. The art in the gallery/store ranges from new to established. Nothing is boring and all of it deserves a look. Recommendations: wrist warmers and cloth birth control pill packs from gurlskout.com, Dave Bloomfield’s incredible urban-style abstractions and collage, Graham Fracha’s toolbox designs and work by Tablet’s own Matthew Porter.
As owner Andrea Porter (with her husband Matthew) explains, all artists are allowed to price their own pieces, so what you see reflects the artist’s own needs. The gallery/store has been open only a few months, but should prove to be a wonderful source for finding the perfect piece for decorating that drab loft, depressing studio, basement apartment, or bohemian bachelor (or bachelorette) pad. Or just stop by sometime to see what’s going on in the minds of local area artists. You might find something you like.
